Traditional BBQ Sauce

Yields approximately 2½ cups

1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce

½ cup tomato ketchup

½ cup apple cider vinegar

¼ cup brown sugar

3 tablespoons molasses

3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

½ teaspoon red pepper sauce (Tabasco)

½ teaspoon liquid smoke

1 medium yellow onion (chopped)

1 clove garlic (minced)

2 tablespoons pure vegetable oil

Salt and pepper (to taste)

  1. Heat oil in a non-reactive saucepan. Sauté onion and garlic until tender. Stir in remaining ingredients. Simmer, stirring frequently, for approximately 10 minutes, or until sauce thickens. Remove from heat.
  2. Transfer to a blender. Process until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
