How to Play Basketball: 1. Assemble two teams, each consisting of five (5) players. 2. Assign each player of both teams a position(center, shooting guard, point guard, small forward, and power forward). 3. Determine the length of the game (i.e. four 10-minute quarters with a 15-minute break at half-time). 4. To start the game, have a referee throw the ball into the air while standing in the center of the court, called the opening tip-off. One player from each team tries to catch the ball. The team that wins possession of the ball gets to play offense. (Note: Repeat this step to start the second half. Also note: teams switch sides for the second half). 5. The goal of each team is to score by throwing the ball through the opponent’s basket. Two (2) points are awarded for each successful shot, or three (3) points for each shot taken behind the three-point arc. 6. Players on the same team pass the ball to each other as they try to make it to the opposing team’s basket. At the same time, the opposition plays defense and tries to take possession of the ball so they can attempt to score. There is no traveling with the ball allowed; in other words, the ball must always be dribbled (hitting the floor) as the player in possession of the ball moves about the court. 7. A foul is called when a player makes an illegal body contact. A free throw is awarded to the opposition if a team commits consecutive fouls. A player who commits six (6) fouls, or five (5) fouls in other instances (i.e. a high-school game), is disqualified. If the ball travels out of bounds by whoever touched it last, the opposition gets possession of it. 8. The winner is the team that scores the most points within the set time period. If there is a tie, extra time may be allotted (i.e. 5 minutes) called overtime. Whichever team scores the most points in overtime, they are declared the winning team.
Helpful Tips: No matter what sport or physical activity you and/or your guests decide to participate in at your outdoor barbecue event, this section provides useful information and tips for optimal performance and enjoyment:
While exercising, perspiration allows your body to cool off as the sweat evaporates from your skin (a natural cooling mechanism), but in the process of this thermoregulation you loose electrolytes in addition to H2O. Therefore, if you’ve been especially sweating a lot, you need to replenish your lost electrolytes. In this case, sports drinks - fortified with electrolytes - (e.g., Gatorade, Powerade, All Sport, Recharge, Extreme Ripped Force and Champion Nutrition Revenge Sport) are good choices. There are also other energy drinks available on the market, such as vitamin-fortified water (e.g., Glacéau [a.k.a. Glaceau] Vitamin Water, Glacéau Smart Water, Glacéau Fruit Water, Glacéau Vitamin Energy, Propel Fitness Water and SoBe Life Water).
